Today we are bombarded with questions about our identity! It’s overwhelming at times. In order for us to really know who we are, we must go to the Bible. In this 10-Day Devotional, we will look to the Bible to learn more about who we are in Christ.
Genesis 1:27 (NLT)
So God created human beings in His own image. In the image of God He created them; male and female He created them.
With everything He created (which is literally everything), it was only the humans which He made in His image. This is a pretty big deal, ladies! But what does this mean? In order to really appreciate how we were created, we have to focus our attention on Who we were created in the image of: God.
There are some of God’s traits that are exclusively His; however, in His sovereignty and love, He chose to share some of His traits with us. There are quite a few, but let’s just look at four of them:
We are speaking beings. In Genesis 1 God said and it was so. Similarly, we are to speak, according to the Word of God, to bring forth the will of God here in this earth realm. We are to be led by the Holy Spirit and speak the life-giving words of Scripture. Proverbs 18:21 says that death and life are in the power of the tongue. Other creatures don’t have this speaking power; only humans. That’s pretty powerful stuff!
We can think and rationalize. Proverbs 4:7 says that we are to get wisdom and understanding. God would not instruct us to do something if we could not do it. Only God “knows everything” (1 John 3:20), but He has given us the capacity of gaining knowledge, wisdom, and understanding.
We have the capacity to have relationships with others. God is sovereign, mighty, infinite, holy, self-sufficient, (just to name a few of His many great traits) and yet He created life on earth and in heaven to share in His existence. That should make you feel pretty special. The Bible is really one big love story! What Jesus did for us on the cross was to put us back into a right relationship with God! If ever you feel rejected, unwanted or unloved, just think about that! God wants you and He created you to want Him too.
We have the ability to love. God is love (1 John 4:8) and in His image, we are created with the ability to love God, others, ourselves, and even our enemies. God has even commanded us to love- this is perhaps the most important of His traits that we must display daily.
Being made in His image is such a privilege. God has chosen to take some of His great traits and share them with us so every time we look in the mirror (even on those days when the physical reflection may need a little lipstick) we can “see the spiritual” reflection of the daughter of the Most High and know that our identity in Him is made perfect in Christ Jesus. Today, think about how you reflect these traits. What can you do to show the image of Jesus Christ today?
God bless you. Stay encouraged.
