Who Am I? Devotional Series Day 4: The Salt of the Earth

Do you have salt in your cabinets/cupboards/pantry? Most likely your answer is yes. Why? Because you use it to flavor your meals. Even in low-salt diets, salt has its proper place. What does salt have to do with your identity? Well, Jesus said we are salt.

Matthew 5:13 (NLT)

You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.

5 Things You Should Know About Salt

  1. Salt is necessary. According to recent scientific studies, a no-salt diet is generally considered more detrimental to one’s health than a high salt diet (now don’t you go shaking all that extra salt on your food!). The correct balance of salt in the body is a critical part of maintaining healthy blood pressure levels.

  2. Salt is an electrolyte. Basically, electrolytes carry the electrical energy in your body so that your body does what it needs to do like transmitting nerve impulses and moving your muscles. An extreme lack of electrolytes, like sodium, can result in some serious muscle cramping and more severe medical emergencies.

  3. Salt is a preservative. The presence of salt helps to prohibit the growth of mold and bacteria.

  4. Salt improves the natural flavor of food. Just taste an unsalted bowl of pasta. Enough said.

  5. Salt makes things…sweeter? Yep. Just take a look at many dessert recipes and you’ll find a bit of salt (even if you don’t see “salt” you may see baking powder or baking soda-both of which contain sodium). Also, have you ever seen a person put salt on their watermelon? It's because the salt increases the sweetness of the fruit (I'll just take their word for it... LOL).

Isn’t it interesting that Jesus calls us “the salt of the earth”? Just these five benefits of salt show you how important salt is. Well, He is saying the same thing about you: you are necessary. You are needed to make God’s will happen in the earth. You are needed to preserve or keep things from going bad in your home, family, job, community- through intercession and acting on the Word of God. You are needed to bring some flavor and life into bland situations. Peoples' lives should be improved because you are there. You are the one who must bring out the best in people. You make life sweeter: by the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit, He may use you to bring the sweetness out of bitter people and/or circumstances through love, patience, and encouragement.

Don’t think for a moment that you don’t make a difference in this world. You are the necessary salt. (So get to shakin’….cheesy, but I had to do it!).

God bless you. Stay encouraged.
