Who Am I? Devotional Series Day 5: The Light of the World

When I was a child my family lived on the 9th floor of a 10-floor high rise apartment building located on the top of a steep hill. At night, from our vantage point, the twinkling lights of the city made the night look a bit brighter. One night a bad storm caused a power outage affecting the area surrounding us. The darkness was haunting. When you grow up in or near the city, it’s moments like these when you are reminded just how dark it truly is at night.

Matthew 5:14 (NLT)

You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.

We live in a dark world that is only growing darker. In John 1:4-9, we learn that Jesus Christ is the True Light. Jesus calls us the light of the world in Matthew 5:14; however, we must remember that we are light because He gave us that light.

John 1:9 (NLT)

The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.

While it is impossible to be the light without Christ, when we are in Christ, we cannot be hidden. We are expected to shine in the dark places. God may put us on a job, in a neighborhood, or even in a family where there is darkness. Your job is to be the light.

Keep in mind, not everyone will be happy about all of your “shininess”.

John 3:19 (NLT)

And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil.

Some people love the darkness because they prefer to live a life that God calls sinful. When you are in a dark room and then turn on the lights, it’s an assault to your eyes! Your pupils constrict because they have grown accustomed to the darkness. Don’t be surprised by the way people who have grown accustomed to a dark and sinful lifestyle respond to your presence. You may even find that they may want to pull away from you. It is the True Light who dwells within you that they are really pulling away from. But we cannot let that stop us from continuing to share the gospel of Jesus Christ through words and deeds because it’s needed in this world. Just like those twinkling lights of the city, people won’t realize just how dark it is, until the Light is gone.

  • How is God using you as light?

  • Is it on your job, your family, your community?

  • Are you consistently letting your light shine as instructed in Matthew 5:16?

  • Have you allowed sin to dull your light?

  • Ask God to show you the areas of your life that may be dulling the fullness of your light.

God bless you. Stay encouraged.
