A Celebration of Freedom

4th of July

Americans just finished celebrating the 4th of July- the day commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence from British rule. From state-to-state and city-to-city celebrations take place in the way of family gatherings and cookouts full of hamburgers and hot dogs, beaches jammed with beach-goers, and, of course, spectacular fireworks displays. It's all in celebration of FREEDOM.

But before there was the Declaration of Independence, there was a declaration of freedom for those who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

John 8:36 (NLT)

So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.

This is truly something to celebrate! Jesus Christ has not only set us free from the penalty of sin (eternal separation from God), but also from the power of sin. But how can that be? Proverbs 20:9 presents an age old question: "Who can say, 'I have cleansed my heart; I am pure and free from sin'?". Unfortunately, because of the sin of the first man, Adam, man is born with a sin nature. That hardly seems fair right? Well, to add more insult to injury there is nothing we can do to free ourselves from the bondage of sin. So let's get this straight: because of the sin of someone we've never met, we are born sinful and there is nothing we can do to deliver us from that bondage of sin. It gets worse because the Bible says that the penalty of sin is death! No matter how much good we do or how kind or nice we are to people, that will never put us in right standing with God.

We are in need of a Savior who will declare us free from the bondage of the penalty and power of sin. We are in need of Someone who will not only pay the penalty of death for mankind's sin but overcome it.

Just as one man, Adam, caused sin to enter into the world, one Man, Jesus Christ, has set us free from sin and made us the righteousness of God. For those who choose to believe, this freedom means that we can live our life as God intended: free from condemnation, free from the power of sin, and free to have joy, peace, and victory in life. This is how God always intended for us to live. We are free from the pain, regret, guilt and shame of our past.

We don't need just one day of the year to celebrate our freedom; celebrate everyday. Thank the Lord Jesus Christ for what He did over 2000 years ago. We have been declared FREE!!

God bless you. Stay encouraged!
