A Google search of the word “temples” results is some breath-taking images like the Venkateswara Temple in Atlanta, Georgia, or the Sripuram Golden Temple at Vellore City in India, or the Todaiji Temple in Japan. Architecturally, they are fascinating and beautiful. However, all of these temples and many other temple buildings in the world were built to worship pagan gods and idols. There is no life in these temples because these pagan gods are all dead and/or nonexistent.
1 Corinthians 3:16
Don’t you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you?
God’s people are the temple of God. The living God dwells within His people by His Holy Spirit. We learn in 1 Corinthians 6:19 that a Christian’s body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. We are not just a spiritual house (1 Peter 2:5), but we are a temple. A temple is where worship and devotion to God takes place. It is a holy and sacred place.
Many Christians do not know that God considers them to be a holy and sacred place. Like the church of Corinth, Christians today are entirely too cozy with the secular ways of the world. Rather than separating themselves from the ways of the world, they choose to participate in worldly activity that God has called a sin. In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, Paul had to remind them that their body was the temple of God; the actual dwelling place of the Holy Spirit. As a result, they should not be living the same kind of life that nonbelievers were living.
When Jesus was crucified He purchased each and every believer with His blood. As a result of that purchase, believers no longer belong to themselves. Instead, each believer belongs to God. Basically, Jesus has the title and the deed to your body. Therefore, we are to honor and glorify God with our bodies. As beautiful as some of the physical temples are, God sees you as far more beautiful and glorious than any physical structure built by man. This beauty comes from the glory of the living God who dwells within you.
How are you honoring your body as the temple of the Holy Spirit of the living God? Does your lifestyle glorify God: what you eat, drink, and wear? How about the things you say and the way you conduct yourself? Ask God to reveal to you the ways that you are not honoring the holy temple that is your body. Ask Him to help you live a life that glorifies Him.
God bless you. Stay encouraged.
