"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for; the evidence of things not seen".
"The just shall live by faith".
"Without faith it's impossible to please God".
"Oh you of little faith, why did you doubt"?
"Faith without works is dead".
I can repeat each to these Bible verses with no problem. Like other people who "grew up in the church" these "faith" verses are firmly set in our memory. But for many Christians, the lesson of faith stops at the level of just being book knowledge. While it's great to have this book knowledge to really live by faith we must go beyond mere book knowledge and apply what we have learned. Being able to define faith is one thing, but living by faith requires action.
It's the action of faith that makes faith real in our lives.
My Pastor, Dr. Mike Freeman of Spirit of Faith Christian Center, wrote a book titled "Before the Storm" where he instructs the reader to have regular "faith episodes". In other words, everyday we have to do things, big or small, that gets us out of our comfort zone and increases our faith in God. This requires that we do things that are out of our scope of skill, talent, and ability.
We need to have that Jonathan-anointing found in 1 Samuel 14 when Jonathan and his armor bearer went out to go after the Philistines while the rest of the Israelite army, including his father Saul, were just chillin' in their camp. God caused those two to completely take out 20 Philistine fighters (makes me think of that scene in Charlie's Angels when Drew Barrymore was tied up in a chair and totally beat up five guys...YouTube it...lol). The point is, that God will take what we have and with His divine power use us to accomplish great works. The Bible says that God is actually looking for people to whom He can show Himself strong. These are the people who demonstrate their faith in Him by doing what God has directed them to do.
2 Chronicles 16:9
The eyes of the Lord search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him...
It's not enough that we just believe in God. We have to trust Him and move based on the belief that God is. He is. He is what? He is whatever you need. You need the talent? You need the skills? You need the knowledge? You need the strength? You need the provision? He is all of that. When God sent Moses back to Egypt to deliver His people from slavery, Moses looked at his own inabilities and discounted himself as being able to do it. He did exactly what we do: told God all about his own limitations as if God did not already know. But that did not stop God. God did not say "well Moses, you're right. Let me go find someone more qualified." Rather He showed Moses His power so that Moses would see that it would be by God's power that he would successfully accomplish this impossible task. God told Moses to tell them that 'I AM' sent him. Moses' faith got real when went back to Egypt to do what he knew was impossible for him alone but with God was not only possible but guaranteed: to set God's people free and bring them out of captivity.
God was the "I AM" then and He is the "I AM" today. We have to believe that truth and couple our belief with our trust in Him and make a decision to make faith real through action.
God bless you. Stay encouraged!
