Well, I see that title got your attention.
Recently, I read an article about how fear can be a good thing. Have you ever heard that? Do you believe that? Well, as a Christian and a believer in the Word of God, I wholeheartedly disagree with that statement.
But let's be clear, I am not talking about the reverential fear of God where we remain in awe of and give honor to the Lord. No, I'm talking about timidity, cowardice, dread or terror; this type of fear the Bible says has torment. This fear is not from God. When it comes to His children, God does not want us to live a life of terror, torment, dread, anxiety, worry, doubt, or any other fear-related disposition.
Fear is Not from God
The idea that fear can be a good thing is a worldly one and as Christians we must separate ourselves from all worldly thinking. God instructs us NOT to be conformed to the ways of this world, but rather to be transformed by the renewing of our mind (cf. Romans 12:1-2). So, here is a mind-renewing moment: Fear is not from God!
Here is what the Bible says:
God will withhold no good thing from those who walk uprightly (Psalm 84:11).
God has NOT given us the spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).
God has given us ALL things that pertain to life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3).
Those things that God deems to be good, He gives to us; however, because fear is not good in God's eyes, He does not give it to us.
Would you give a child needles, razor blades and knives to play with? Of course not because you know those things are not good for them and would cause them great harm. Well, our Father in heaven knows that fear is NOT a good thing so He has NOT given it to us. I keep repeating this because the worldly thinking that fear is good is a lie that too many Christians have been accepting and it is keeping them from living the blessed life that God has prepared for them. Personally, I have to resist the temptation to give in to fear everyday!
What is from God?
Look at some things that God has ALREADY given us:
1. ALL things that pertain to Life and Godliness
4. Sound Mind
Again- He has NOT given us fear. So that means we can live a balanced and disciplined life full of love, joy, peace, faith, success and goodness. Fear does none of this for us!
Exposing the Lie
Satan is the father of lies. And here are just a few of the lies he has used to try to convince us that fear is good:
Lie #1: Fear can keep us safe because a "little" fear will keep us from entering into dangerous situations or making bad decisions.
EXPOSED: Psalm 121:7 says that God is the One who keeps us from ALL harm. He watches over us and keeps us from stumbling. He is our place of safety. Just read Psalm 91 to see how perfectly He protects us! As part of His protection plan, He gives us the wisdom to make the right choices. Fear does not do this; ONLY GOD does!
Lie #2: Fear can teach us by showing us the weak areas in our life so we can get better and stronger by facing those fears.
EXPOSED: John 14:26 says that the Holy Spirit of the Living God is our teacher. Once we receive Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we receive the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Then for the rest of our life, He guides us, leads us, comforts us, prays for us, teaches us. He is the one who shows us the way we should go. He will never guide us into a path that will lead to our utter destruction. As the Spirit of Truth, He guides us into the truth based on what God our Father has said in His Word. Fear can't teach us a thing.
Lie #3: Fear makes us stronger because fear forces us to be courageous.
EXPOSED: Psalm 46:1 says that God is our strength and refuge. He is our help even in times of trouble. Our source of strength is God and God alone. Philippians 4:13 says "For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength". God told Joshua to be strong and courageous and NOT to fear. I would think if fear made us strong and courageous then God would have told Joshua to BE fearful and courageous but He did not! In truth, fear actually weakens and paralyzes you and it will keep you from fulfilling the will of God in your life.
As Christians, we live by faith and faith is believing God and aligning your words and actions with that belief. Trust God and know that His plans are the best plans. Trust that He will lead you and guide you by His Spirit regardless of how things appear His plans will prevail! Divorce yourself from the world's thinking and align your thinking with the Word of God! Fear not and know that HE is GOD!
God bless you. Stay encouraged.
