“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” Joshua 1:8 NKJV
I’ve been studying the book of Joshua for several weeks now. Why am I only on verse 8 of the first chapter? Well, it’s been an intentional slow study- a verse by verse; word by word kind of study. I will probably be studying this book for the rest of my life at this rate lol. But seriously, it’s been a wonderfully eye-opening study where I’ve been really looking into the meaning of the words. Now, like many Christians, I’ve read Joshua 1:8 many times and have committed it to memory. But this time, the Lord opened my eyes to one of the words in this scripture in a way He never has before: night. In the past I’ve read ‘day and night’ to mean each morning and each evening...from wake up to bedtime I need to meditate on God’s Word and I still believe that is a correct understanding of this passage. But this time, as I looked up that word in my concordance I learned that another use of the word “night” is despair or gloominess. I had to stop there for a moment and re-read Joshua 1:8 with that understanding: meditate on God’s Word even during times of gloominess and despair so I can do all that is written in it. It can be so easy during times of despair to keep your eyes focused on the problem rather than God’s Word. This can lead us into a deep depression and cause us to have a bleak outlook on our situation and our life (at least that’s what can happen to me). But God commands us to keep focused in His Word even during these desperate times so we can do what He says and have a prosperous result and good success. Life can throw some curve balls at us, times can be stressful and things can look bad...bleak...gloomy....dark...no hope....BUT stay focused on God’s Word. He has a good outcome in store for us!! We just have to have faith, trust and obey Him. Good success is ours!!! God bless you and be encouraged.
